General Humberto Delgado 1906 -1965

General Delgado was an outspoken and determined General of the Portuguese Air Force and later a diplomat. He had the audacity to run as a liberal democratic independent against the main candidate promoted by the de facto dictator Antonio Salazar in the Presidential elections of 1958.

He was ambushed and assassinated in Spain in 1965 by the Portuguese security police.  His remains were initially buried in Spain but in 1990 they were reinterred in the National Pantheon in Lisbon.

I came upon this statue today where it stands in a small square in downtown Porto.  It portrays him standing without any military weaponry, draped in the flag and arms outstretched and turned upward.   A telling pose.

The international airport in Lisbon is named after him.
