Make it Happen - and more

I got a very crowded train to Edinburgh and was due to meet Jenny at 10.45 but her train was cancelled. I went to see a very interesting Mike Nelson exhibition at the Fruitmarket till she arrived at 12.15.

We walked straight to Ciao Roma for lunch. It was chosen by Jenny as it was close to the Festival Theatre. It was nice enough but nothing we couldn’t have cooked at home. We shared a rum baba - very sweet without a hint of rum. However the wine we had was nice.

The play Make it Happen had a full house. We enjoyed it and thought it well-written and funny. The music was of the time (late 80’s and 90’s) and though very loud fitted well with what was going on in the play. I thought the actor playing Fred Goodwin was particularly good. We enjoyed the second half more. Brian Cox wasn’t hamming it up as much as before the interval when he gave the audience what they wanted - a bit of his sweary Succession character. It was interesting to be reminded of the precarious situation of those times when friends nearly lost all their savings in Northern Rock.

Walking down South Bridge was horrendously packed so we had to dodge in and out of the crowds. However we got to Harvey Nicks for a cocktail. We sat outside to get cooled down as the theatre had been very stuffy. I got another noisy crowded train home but at least I had a seat. It was a great day - usually we have a few days at the book festival but I’ll be away this year. However I’m going to try to fit in a day for Goldsworthy at the end of the month.
