Literally Giant Haystacks!, Burham

Being Friday it was our usual day for a drink at the Red Bull in Eccles. Unfortunately, at the moment this means a rather big detour to get there due to a number of road closures and roadworks. Since the ones near the village have been in place yet more have appeared over the last week - it's all becoming a bit ridiculous. The danger is if something happens on the M20 nearby we could well face complete gridlock so we're crossing our fingers (and toes) that there are no problems in that direction!
On the way back from the pub (taking the detour in reverse) we spotted this huge tower of hay bales, it must have been well over twenty feet high, so just had to stop and take a shot of it against the glowering sky. I think it looked quite majestic in its own way.
Now I know technically this may not be a haystack but as soon as I saw it I did think of the name Giant Haystacks. Some of you may well recognise this name, especially if you watched the World of Sport on ITV on Saturday afternoons in the Seventies and early Eighties like I did. They often featured wrestling and two of the stand out characters were, of course, Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy. Giant Haystacks (real name Martin Austin Ruane) was a very intimidating sight - he was 6ft 11 tall, weighed between 31 stone (at the beginning of his career) and 48 stone (by the end of it) and also sported a huge beard! I also remember the crowd being quite vociferous on some occasions and once a woman got off her seat and tried to hit one of the wrestlers with her handbag - those were the days!
When we got back home we watched an excellent documentary about the artist Eric Ravilious. If you haven't seen any of his work before it's well worth checking out. Also recommend Bookish, starring Mark Gatiss - it's beautifully shot and acted, with just the right amount of humour, intrigue and mystery.
