Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years

I’m assuming this is okay to share as when I asked the NGS staff in the RSA they said that photography was permitted as long as you didn’t use flash. Or are you only allowed to take a photograph of the art as long as you don’t show it to anyone else? Which would be a little perverse.

This image shows the site specific work Oak Passage. It was made with branches from windfallen trees (many from Storm Éowyn) and serve as a reminder that the oak floor of the gallery was once a tree. Goldsworthy sees the floor as much a part of the work as the branches. In the background is another new work, Ferns

I really enjoyed the exhibition, especially the larger, new pieces specifically created for the gallery rooms. It was also great to see photographs of other, earlier works out in the countryside and particularly the film of the Midsummer Snowballs in London, the book of which was been on my bookshelf for years.

Although you have to pre-book tickets it wasn’t too busy and even with other people around it was possible to connect with the bigger pieces without anyone else in the space if you were prepared to wait a moment or two.

Earlier we went to a jewellers to see about getting new rings after L lost her wedding ring last week. We have decided that rather than simply replacing hers we will get two new rings, one each, with the same design as each other but different from the old ones.

And then we had lunch in the new Filmhouse and picked up our membership cards. After the gallery we met up with our friend D for a cup of coffee/tea from a van outside the gallery before getting the bus back to Porty. A most successful day.
