Govan Old Church

The location of Govan Old Church is one of the oldest places of worship in Glasgow. It sits within an ancient churchyard and is believed to have been the administrative and ecclesiastical centre of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde.

Govan was originally an agricultural and fishing village, grew during the industrial revolution, through the development first of weaving then light engineering, to become, in the early 20th century, a world leader in the ship-building industry. Following the economic depression, and the decline of Scotland ’s heavy industry, the face of Govan has changed significantly.

The present Govan Old Church was designed by the distinguished Scottish architect Robert Rowand Anderson and completed in 1888. It is the fourth parish church on a site where archaeological excavations have revealed Christian burials dating back to at least the 6th century and some believe pre-Christian worship took place. The unique stones are now a focal point of the church and on display. The project was supported by Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

I decided to give this image a bit of treatment. Hope you like it.
