Hover-fly not hovering

My buddleia is still being totally ignored by anything that looks like a butterfly but I did spot this on it. Quite large, but still totally silent in flight. The plan was to go to the lake and look for wildlife as the forecast was 100% dry but, as we pulled up, the only drops of rain to fall all day landed on the windscreen. Back home and plan 'B'.
