The Bear Guard...

The Polar Bears' ancestral 'paths' to the shores of Hudson Bay pass directly through Churchill, Manitoba. Each year in early winter the bears walk the same paths that their great, great, great grandparents walked to where the the water of Hudson Bay is in the process of freezing solid enough for a bear to walk out on the ice to hunt it's food source...seals. The people of Churchill deal with this phenomenon each and every year. They leave their homes and cars unlocked so that anyone caught outside while a bear is in the vicinity can duck into safety. Children are escorted to school and back, and everyone is on high alert. In late winter, when the ice has formed and the bears are all out hunting, things ease up a bit for several months. But many bears remain in the area during the summer and precautions must be taken, sooo...meet Jacob. He's one of the town's Bear Guard Force. If you are planning an activity beyond the 'safe' boundaries of Churchill, a Bear Guard should be there to help keep you safe. Natural Habitat takes all of this very seriously and we got to know and trust Jacob.  m
