Crane-fly Orchid
I take this crane-fly orchid's photo every year. It's hard because it's so wispy and the phone/camera can't find it amidst all the leaf litter etc. But the tree makes a halfway decent background.
They bloom in late July/August and then after the flower dies back green leaves eventually appear and are visible all winter until sometime in spring, at which point they disappear and I have to remember where to look for the flowers in July. Fortunately I've been monitoring this "patch" for some years now. But this year only the one flower. There was a second flower stalk, but the top of it got whacked off somehow, so no joy there. Last winter there were a lot of green leaves, but they mostly disappeared early and didn't produce flowers. I hope the plants aren't giving up the ghost.
