Diary of an Edinburgher

Baltic Cruise - The End!

We’re quite tired and ready for home, but what a great trip we had. It’s been SO GOOD to visit so many different countries, which seem quite similar, but they’re very proud of their of the individual identities. National flags everywhere, but you won’t see a Union Jack flying too often, in the UK, and definitely not in Scotland. And the Saltire is very political.

But while each country is different, some cannot communicate with their next door neighbours, while others’ languages are similar. They all have much the same worries for the future - low birth rate and declining population (who will pay pensions in 20 years?) high taxes, but also cuts in services, young folk and technology, lack of jobs, climate change - they’ve had several long cold ‘springs’ which used to be reliable.

Finland is the ‘happiest country in the world’ in a recent survey, and yet they have one of the highest suicide rates, and alcoholism is a BIG problem. Their long dark, very cold winters MUST have a detrimental effect on any population.

But yes, the main worry - a potentially very threatening eastern neighbour… AGAIN. What a wonderful world this would be if the only rivalries were in the sporting arenas!

Home now. A stress-free journey And a pleasant 20°. Archie would have happily stayed with Derek, I think - they are very fond of each other.

We have an action packed week, with our Aussie cruisers visiting, and our Aussie dog /house sitter arriving, before we’re off again!

Just crackers and cheese for tea.
NO caviar.
NO steak.
