The elephant

Wednesday
This afternoon I went out to the forest of Fontainebleau, near Barbizon. The forest includes a variety of landscapes, including numerous randomly strewn huge boulders, relics of past geologic events. The forest owes its renown to a couple of factors. The massif and its surrounding areas were the hunting grounds of kings of France from the 11th century onwards, and became the refuge of famous painters such as Millet, Rousseau and Monet and writers such as Victor Hugo. For a while I just sat and read my Kindle, enjoying the sunshine, the gentle breeze and the beauty and calm of the surrounding trees, then later I went for a walk. Roger and I had walked in this area when we were over on our house-hunting trip, and we had tried to find this particular boulder, known as the "elephant", but we never found it. Today, however, I was succesful!
