Loco at Lydney Junction
“The only journey is the one within.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
Cooked breakfast in Ross-on-Wye with BobsBlips, then we headed off to Lydney Harbour. Many years since I’ve been to Lydney, but I didn’t know there was a harbour! Although its’ history dates back to Roman times, it came into its own in the industrial revolution, shipping iron and coal from the Forest of Dean. Now a quiet marina with walking trails, we didn’t have to go far to find remains of its industrial past, with twisted rails fixed to concrete slabs slipping quietly into the mud at the water’s edge of the mighty Severn.
Heading back to Lydney we came to Lydney junction, the southern terminus of the heritage Dean Forest Railway. Plenty of photo possibilities here too, with the old locos and rolling stock lining the side of the road and the old platform which is still in regular use. Today’s photo reminded me of the trains in the sugar cane fields in Queensland, Australia, where I went for a mini-adventure when I packed up my day job over twenty-five years ago.
On the return to Bob’s we stopped off at St.Briavels, another first for me. No coffee and cake today, just a cool pint of lemonade and lime, it was hot!
