Up Close and Personal
Mr. Swallowtail was just inches from my window and rested there for quite some time, so I was able to get a closeup of him. My, what big eyes you have Mr. Swallowtail! Butterflies have compound eyes, meaning they are made up of many individual lenses called ommatidia. This structure allows them to see a wide field of view, perceive motion and colors exceptionally well, and even detect ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye. Next few days will be hot, so I hope Mr. Swallowtail stays in the shade.
