He's up each morning bright and early
This female Great spotted woodpecker visits the garden usually first thing in the morning to feed on the fat square. I've seen the male a few times but he seems to be more timid than the female.
They have stiff tail feathers which they use to prop against a tree or post. They have two toes pointing forwards and two backwards. Their tongue is very long and sticky ideal for getting to insects in the tree bark.
A very misty start today but abit of sun by mid afternoon. Managed to sort out some of the planters out the front and potted up some primulas.
