Brass Band Rehearsal
I bid C and T (and the dogs) farewell after breakfast and headed homeward, but first a short diversion into Wakefield. I visited the Hepworth galleries last year, but ran out of time to visit the cathedral, which remains one I’ve never seen. So today was the day.
As I approached the cathedral I could hear a brass band, and as I entered I could see the Wakefield Metropolitan Band rehearsing. The sound was fantastic. It was heartening to see that many of the players were young. The rehearsal was for a civic concert at midday, to mark the commencement in office of a new mayor.
I had a short walk around the centre, which seems to be struggling like so many. Near the cathedral I came across a bizarre sculpture - I’ve had to google to find out its an “Amazonian Caiman God” and the figures it’s holding in the bowl are sculptor Jason Wilsher Mills parents (see extra). There’s a back- story of course.
Lunch at the Hepworth. Barbara Hepwoth’s sculptures I always enjoy seeing, and there are exhibitions of three other artists works. The major one is Helen Chadwick’s “Life Pleasures” and is interesting and deliberately provocative, but not really my thing. I liked Elizabeth Fritsch’s “Otherworldy Vessels”, My favourite exhibition however was Caroline Walker’s “ Mothering”.
