The Experiment

I had the idea today to try my long lens (420mm all together with the TC) on my cropped sensor D7000. This would become a 630mm equivalent (cropped censor math)... More reach, could be more fun... However, as you can see, it introduced an exceptional amount of noise. I did a little noise reduction here, as much as I felt was reasonable, and still didn't come up with the detail the full frame camera has. I wont count it out for perfect lighting conditions, but when I need to shoot in mediocre lighting, I don't think I'll go this way again.

It was a windy day here. Not a good day for macro and a bit tricky for photography in general... I actually had a hard time holding the above setup steady in the wind. I had my camera mounted on the monopod and with every wind gust, we swayed to and fro. Not much was useable after reviewing today's images on the big screen. But with today's challenges, I was happy enough with this motley young blue jay. I don't know if it's their age or what, but just about every one of them has a funny hair-do. :)

*Edit-I'm now realizing (as i view this on my iPad) that the noise is much more evident on a bigger screen... I can get pretty nitpicky on that thing. ;)
