Surly

I do realise
those eyes
are not real eyes

nevertheless

when a shoal breaks free
and chooses to swim after me
on a country house garden walk
I balk at such a thing

and surmise that
it would be wise
to retreat to my high-rise
flat.

Such fishy attention
makes me bad-tempered.

But so what!

Surely
on this occasion
I've the right to be surly?
