Kicked off
Three years ago, during a wet walk, I discovered that my walking boots were no longer waterproof, despite me having diligently applied a waterproofing spray ever since I had bought them a few years previously.
When I got home, I cleaned and dried them, and they got bunged into the back of a cupboard...
Last month I got them out, because I had found the can of waterproofing spray lurking on a shelf - and I read the small print, which stated that it isn't suitable for leather. This is despite the fact that I bought it with the boots on the recommendation of the salesperson in the shop.
Now, I want a pair of operational walking boots because when I take Beanio for paddock walks (which is most days) I get wet feet unless I'm in gumboots. And walking a regular three or four kilometres in gummies has resulted in blistered toes.
So I took myself off to chat with a cobbler, carrying the old walking boots to find out if they were beyond redemption. His instant response was they simply needed some tlc, which he offered to do for me. At a cost.
I quizzed him about what needed doing, and having been told that leather conditioner needed to be applied several times over a few days, followed by applications of a combined conditioner and wax, I bought two small pots of the magic gunk and have carefully rubbed it into the boots over the last three weeks.
Today I gave them their first test drive, to see if I have successfully resurrected them. They are amazingly comfortable and I strode out knowing that my feet were snug and comfortable inside them,
And I arrived home with dry feet.
Woohoo! I do love a home remedy.
