Vintage craft kit

I have been storing this marquetry kit for literally decades, having acquired it from a late great aunt, I think. I always felt it might come in useful and I am finally going to attempt to use it to patch some damaged veneer on our dining table. Even if it doesn't work well, it will be better than the current splinter hazard. I'm not sure if the guy on the box is from the 70s or 80s, but he has a great moustache.
