ChainFerry
The Sandbanks chain ferry operated by the BOURNEMOUTH-SWANAGE MOTOR ROAD AND FERRY COMPANY.
The company operates the "Bramble Bush Bay" chain ferry that crosses the entrance to Poole Harbour between Sandbanks and Shell Bay.
The present ferry came into service in January 1994, it is the fourth ferry to operate this service since the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company came into being in July 1923 following an Act of Parliament.
The ferry, 242 feet in length, has a nominal capacity of 48 cars.
Propulsion is diesel-hydraulic.
Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) inventor of a wireless telegraphy system conducted experiments from Sandbanks over a 30 year period
Some claim that the first ever radio transmission was from this area.
To honour that possible event, I decided to upload this blipfoto in a special way. I took the photo with my Canon camera, downloaded the digital image to an iPad, and as there was no Wi-Fi signal about, set up my iPhone as a hotspot for the iPad and then used the 3G network to complete the upload.
What do think of that, Signore Marconi?
