Penllegere observatory

The first photo of the moon was taken from this building plans of restoring it to working order are happening.

Structurally the Observatory comprises a cylindrical, stone built instrument room with a rectangular room, almost certainly a developing room, attached. The construction of the rectangular room is unusual, as it is built from rectangular, hollow tiles. The structure probably fell into disrepair in the 1920s, and during world war two it was used for target practice by American troops stationed at Penllergare. In 1981, Lliw Valley Borough Council restored the observatory, but subsequently little maintenance was carried out and the structure is once more falling into disrepair.

In 1998, the observatory was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument (reference GM410[SWA]).
