An unprovoked attack
Today we had a day out in St Mawes with our friend Charlotte.
That wasn't the plan........... the plan was to do another 'I Walk Cornwall' walk and walk around the St Anthony's Head peninsula, but that's a whole other story.
Just before we went home the humans had a salted caramel ice cream. We went onto the beach so that Ann & Charlotte could sit on a rock and eat their ice cream and I could be let off my lead to have a play and even a swim if I wanted. I didn't want to play because it was a bit hot. I just curled up in the shade of the rocks in good dog mode.
There were quite a few dogs on the beach but I was quite happy lying next to Ann & Charlotte so I wasn't really paying much attention to what they were doing until................ some people quite close to us shouted that a Beagle was trying to eat their picnic and then it started trying to attack their dog. They shoo-ed it away, but then it came and attacked me. I honestly hadn't done anything to deserve that. Fortunately it's owner captured it and took it away, but she didn't put it on it's lead so two secs later it was back to attack me again.
This time it was biting me. I tried to defend myself but it caught me unawares so I didn't stand a chance. Ann tried to get me away from it, Charlotte was holding two ice creams shouting at it's owner to take it away, it's owner said, 'I'm trying'! well she wasn't trying hard enough and another lady tried to intervene and get the Beagle off me. This whole incident probably lasted less than a minute but it was sooooo scarey.
Ann was completely traumatised and I was shaking. Obviously Ann inspected me all over because my fur was all wet where it had bitten me, but apart from a tiny cut that was bleeding above my eye, (1mm closer and it could have damaged my eye) I seem to have escaped any other physical injuries. Ann is hoping that the incident hasn't traumatised me as much as it has her.
However, the worst thing was.................. the Beagle's owner didn't even apologise. She just went and sat a bit further along the beach with horrid Beagle. And when we left the beach we went off a different route because no way was Ann going to walk me past horrid Beagle.
Oh and all's well that ends well.................. I got to finish Ann's ice cream cone because she thought I needed a treat after all that trauma??!!
The thing is...................... there's no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner. And we're pretty sure that dog will do it again. And obviously we don't want that. But what do you do? Photograph dog & owner and post it all over social media????? There were plenty of witnesses on the beach that saw what happened. I guess the sensible thing to do, would have been for Ann to leave me with Charlotte while she went and talked to it's owner. However Ann was more traumatised than me, so that really wasn't an option. It looked like quite a young dog and a lot of people don't seem to realise that us doggies need training. ….............And dogs that eat picnics and attack other dogs need to learn that, that isn't appropriate behaviour.
Anyway, the good thing is, as far as I'm concerned, I'm fine. Obviously Ann is going to keep an eye on the cut above my eye but atm it's not bothering me.
