Where's Eliza?
Eliza Doolittle that is, described as a "common flower girl" by Professor Higgins, in George Bernard Shaw's play, Pygmalion. Covent Garden is where Eliza plied her trade and first encountered the phonetics Professor. This display appears to pay tribute to Covent Garden's floral history although the market primarily traded in fruit and vegetables. The market moved to new buildings at Nine Elms, Battersea in 1974. Now the historic site is a major tourist destination with craft shops, cafes and street entertainers.
Pygmalion was the inspiration for Lerner and Loewe's musical, My Fair Lady, with the character of Eliza played by Audrey Hepburn. The musical follows the same plot line of Professor Higgins taking a bet that, following his tuition in pronunciation, he will be able to pass Eliza off as a 'society lady'. This didn't go too well when Eliza was taken to the Royal Ascot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_5RyXYhdP8
