Three Sisters

When we met at his sister's funeral a few weeks ago, my cousin's son, D, told me he would email me some old family photos he had come across when sorting out his Dad's house, following his move into a care home.

They arrived today and most of them were new to me. The main photo shows my Mum, Gladys (right), her older sister Elsie (left, D's Nan) and younger sister, Florence (centre) on a day at the seaside, probably Southend-on-Sea which was the nearest resort to their home in Essex.

Florence was always known as Wink, short for Winkle, which was her nickname because she was so small when she was born, though her husband, my Uncle Eric, always called her Jane, for reasons that remained a mystery (her middle name was Matilda!)

I  reckon this would have been taken in the early 1930s (Mum was born in 1917) and the youthful pre-war joy on their faces makes me smile

In extras is one of the last photos I took of them together in later years, from l to r: Mum, Elsie, Wink.

It was a fairly standard Monday, with a lot of watching tennis on the first day of Wimbledon and I never got round to taking the  night photo I planned when I got back from Keep Fat, so this is a bit of an EB
