Red, black and blue

It's hard to understand why some things make economic sense and others fall aside. We tried to have lunch in the (Cardigan) castle café. Charming staff, very quiet, easily found a well-positioned table, some tasty-looking light bites on the menu... sorry they are only doing 2/3 course set lunch

A five minute walk to the bakery cafe, full of young families, noise and laughter. Of course they do their normal menu on a Sunday - he almost scoffed but was too well-behaved. Mashed avocado on toast, of course, under the exposed metal roof-trusses and unshaded bulbs. Out-of-date in London, I'm sure, but thriving here

The ice-cream maker that is an echo from MrsM's past has a summer-only shop in town selling nothing but their ice-cream: cones or tubs. I'm amazed that pays for rent, staff and other overheads. Very generous scoops - we had to sit on a bench to eat it without dripping

The town cocktail bar, which was also an occasional music venue, and very busy when we were here in the winter, has closed. A shame - it created some of our fondest memories of that time. Selling good-value ice cream is better business than selling expensive alcohol?

Our last day here, so it has to be the sea again. Usually I'm dissatisfied with the colours and complexity of sea pictures here - the reality is so extraordinary. Within the limitations of a phone camera, this is probably as good as its going to get; I'm pleased. Businesses come and go, inexplicably. The sea is always here
