St Cuthbert's
Hooray the sun has made its way to the North West of England. Let's plan a day out. Only I still can't walk far, so I planned a car trip with visits. Here I am in Over Kellett at the closest St Cuthberts church to me that I hadn't visited. I timed the visit to coincide with the end of the service so that the doors would be open and there would be people inside to ask about the church. And what friendly informed lot they all were , delighted to meet another St Cuthberts fan. The vicar had come over from the Durham area insisting on a St Cuthbert's church. He was young and enthusiastic. We talked about the pilgrims route over the sands to Lindisfarne and St Cuthbert's cave. I chatted to a parishioner who was doing a masters on pilgrims routes. She lives in in Preston but comes to this church because of its association. They told me where the nearby St Cuthbert churches were, showed me round the church , pointing out the oldest bits, the Saxon font, the Saxon cross in the wall and offered me refreshments. It was an uplifting visit.
PS - specially for PaulaJ - the other interesting fact is that the Booker family of Booker book prize fame originally came from Over Kellett and there is a plaque with their names on the wall and several buried in the churchyard. However they had made their money from sugar plantations and slavery in and out of Liverpool . The Prize wanted to disassociate itself from the family's slavery connections so now it is administered by a separate trust. Read about it here. I learned such a lot from my visit
