Enjoying the Pentas and I'm Ok...
I noticed that this Zebra heliconia butterfly, aka Zebra Longwing, was sporting a slightly deformed right wing. Whether it was a developmental issue or from a predator's near miss is unknown.
The Zebra Longwing's black and yellow markings serve as a warning to would be predators that they are poisonous to eat. As caterpillars, they eat passionflower plants, which contain a toxin. Zebra Longwings are native to the Southern U.S., Mexico, Central America and some Caribbean Islands. They tend to live longer (5-6 months) than most butterflies and they often can be found roosting together in groups at night. The Zebra Longwing has the honor of being chosen as Florida's State Butterfly back in 1996.
Wishing All of Us a Very Peaceful Week! m
