Sovereign Scale

This is a brass scale made to check gold sovereigns and half sovereigns. This one was made c1848.. 
You did two checks - first place the coin in the appropriate hole and if the scale balanced you then did the second check that was to pass the coin through the slot to check the thickness. 
If it passed both checks it was ok - if not it was likely a fake.
