A late start and a
lack of motivation has
affected my day...

I left the house at 8:30 pondering where I would take my camera today. When in doubt, I pick a quiet route away from city hustle. I turned west at the bottom of the hill and soon was in the Tranquille area.

A Canadian National freight was coming towards me and I noted the broad expanse of bright blue chicory along the roadside. In moments I found myself behind a slow moving pickup truck that was escorting a mower. The mower extended its arm out over the roadside to remove a swath beside the road. I was watching the chicory disappear.

Chicory is one of my favourite weeds that I enjoy in summer. I've read that it is non-native, having arrived somehow from Eurasia. It is being studied scientifically for its medicinal properties. I know it as a coffee substitute when the roots are roasted and ground. Some might enjoy the leaves in salad or as a tangy accent in soup. I just enjoy their splendid addition to the roadside as a painter.

I'm off to have lunch with a friend today and may well be in for a nap in the afternoon. It's the last day of school for teachers in this district. I can't say I miss any of that busyness.
