The things we do to the landscape - and then abandon. The picture is from the start of our day, in Rosebush, a village named after a slate quarry, by the English, trying to approximate the sound of the Welsh place name. It was worked for almost a century, until 1914, leaving huge piles of spoil like these, exposed rock terraces, cavernous pits and abandoned buildings. One of the pits - flooded by the company to feed a turbine - is now a 'secret' wild-swimming spot - a secret known only to those with access to the internet

The quarry is rewilding itself, of course, but it's taking a very long time. The value of slate rests on its durability and resistance to natural processes. It does not easily create soil. It is amazing to see what grows, but vast areas remain as bare and barren as the day the last train left on the line that the US army used for WWII target practice

We moved on to search for some nearby standing stones that are assumed to be prehistoric but, even to my inexpert eye, have clearly been damaged and moved around - even quite recently. They are completely unprotected from livestock and there are internet rumours of a farmer trying to remove them in the 1960s

The surrounding farming featured some sorry looking sheep, fallen fences, damaged land and collapsed walls. For how many centuries the lanscape here must have been shaped by farming, but it has the feel - up here high in the hills - of an era coming to an end

In farm buildings along the road, a cheerful woman was cooking up jams and chutneys that she supplies to Pembrokeshire shops. Not much landscape effect yet, but who knows how a successful business will develop and what changes that will bring

In Goodwick, we toured some of the new public sculptures that have appeared since we were last there. The marshland above the beach has been opened up for public access. Cruise boats have started calling in the harbour, which must be bringing a little money. It felt like a place embracing change
