“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.”
Mary Ann Shaffer : The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Something of a last minute decision. Other plans to go away didn’t materialise and with the weather forecast set fair for the week we decided to go away anyway, and head for the Channel Islands instead. I’ve not been there before (K1 has), although we toyed with the idea when we were in Normandy over thirty years ago. So at long last we get to visit; maybe my sort of homing instinct, there’s something about islands that draws me in – Lindisfarne, Iona, Caldey… now Guernsey. The plans to go by ferry were scrapped as it was more convenient to fly from Bristol than travel to Portsmouth to get a ten-hour overnight ferry. Given the size of the islands and the bus services there I think it was a good choice. Flight was barely an hour too, so we arrived in time to drop our bags at the hotel and get out to explore St Peter Port for a few hours.
