Grasses on the Green

I walked up to the High Road to post a letter this afternoon, walking across the Green on one of the paths created by the Council mowing team. On either side of the path the grasses were high, swaying from side to side, and I was disappointed that there didn’t seem much sign of any interesting natural life anywhere.

I knelt down (dangerous thing to do at my age!) to get a shot of our church with the grasses in the foreground and, as I gingerly stood up, I was pleased to spot a dragonfly on the other side of the path, which I had disturbed. I watched its soaring, elliptical flight across the Green and noted where it had landed, and went to see if I could get a shot. Sadly, there was no sign of it, but I did see this tiny spot of bright red amongst the grasses, which intrigued me.

From my deep and erudite online research on my return home, I have concluded that it’s onion grass, or wild garlic – although it doesn’t look anything like the wild garlic I used to love seeing along the Cumbria Way at Elterwater. Never mind, it’ll do for today’s blip.
