Bingley

I've known of the Bingley 5-rise lock staircase as an iconic feature of the UK canal network since I was a boy, and had never seen them for myself. Hence, with Bingley just 20 minutes by train from Leeds, I couldn't resist the temptation. It would also have been great to meet local Blipper and Turfer Squatbetty, but she's away at the moment. So I had to satisfy myself with taking all her Bingley zones, tying together places that have featured in her posts. I finished off by visiting the very cute Shipley tramway, and impressive Saltaire, before taking the train back to Leeds.

If you've counted four locks in the picture, I'm standing on the fifth, so I'm high enough to get a view down the staircase.

Earlier, I'd had a fair first day at the EURO conference, meeting an ex-PhD student for the first time since 2019, and a few other academic friends.
