The only photo I took today...
...was of my book. I'm reading Ecological Intelligence, by Daniel Goleman. So far, it's about what it takes to really look at the environmental (and health, and social) impacts of the Stuff that we all use every day. It's really interesting, but a bit depressing--the moral of the story is pretty much that everything we use is going to kill us, the planet, and society. I may be exaggerating a bit, but it paints a pretty bleak picture.
As haze and humidity gathered for the thunderstorm that's currently moving over us, I sat outside on the lawn (no doubt covered with pesticides seeping into my bloodstream, the actual streams nearby, and creating super-pests), talking with friends, snacking on dried fruit (surely with preservatives that have synthetic hormones or something), and painting my toenails (with nail polish that I know is chock-full of VOCs and other nasty things that are terrible for me and the planet.) Somehow, despite the fact that I now can't help but think about all of the impacts and the chemicals in my daily life, it was a relaxing hour or so outside.
