My mum never worried about me
Getting my feet wet
Just as long as I kept them
Anchored firmly to the ground
She knew eventually
I’d take some long flight of fancy
That I would forget the ground
And I would forget my feet
And in losing them
I might lose myself
I did lose my feet, you know
Somewhere along the way
But the funny thing is
I did not lose the bird attached to them
I grew new feet
More attuned for flying
I hardly ever swim anymore
But I remember where the ground is
And how to find it
