Holy Corner
Instead of the constant noise of traffic on Sunday mornings nowadays, a hundred years ago there’d have been the sound of hymn singing coming from the four churches at this road junction which became known as Holy Corner.
One built in 1872 but still used a church is not in the photo. The one beside the trees is no longer used as a church but still provides service to the community and is used by a wide variety of groups. Built for North Morningside United Presbyterian Church in 1881 it then became the North Morningside Parish Church but is now called the Eric Liddle Centre after the famous Olympic athlete. (Chariots of Fire) He attended and preached in the red roofed building which was built for the Congregational Church in 1929 replacing an earlier church of 1863 and is now called Morningside United which is a united congregation of the Church of Scotland and United Reformed Church. The church with the tall spire is Christ Church belonging to the Scottish Episcopal Church and built in 1878.
So although the sound of hymns can no longer be heard by passers-by the work of the churches still continue in the four buildings in different ways at Holy Corner.
