Cullen

Mrs CBL and I are spending the next few days on the Moray Frith, based in Cullen, which is some 52 miles north-west of Cruden Bay.  Cullen is a small seaside resort famous for its historical viaduct, beautiful beach, quirky golf course and world-renowned soup Cullen Skink*.

The town’s viaduct carrying a single track railway line was designed by Patrick Barnett and built between 1884-1886.  The line closed in 1968 and is rated as a Grade B listed structure.  Nowadays the viaduct is used as a recreational path and is part of the Moray Firth Trail and the national cycle path.  We walked along a stretch of the path this afternoon and from there I took today’s photos.

*Cullen Skink is a delicious seafood soup made from smoked haddock, potatoes, milk, onion and parsley.  Eaten with slices of crusty bread or oatcakes it is a very filling meal on its own.  Its unusual name is believed to be derived from the Gaelic word for "essence".
