Aigues Mortes

Meaning dead or stagnant water. We are now down in the  Camargue area. Aigues Mortes is most impressive, with its huge twelfth century fortifications.
There have been salt pans here for many many centuries. 
The whole area is a vast series of marsh and salt pans. 
The Camargue is famous for its pink salt pans ( as a result of some pink algae growing in the water) , flamingos, also pink, and wild white horses.
It’s been very hot today so we just went to the town centre where we had a cold drink and marvelled at the vast fortifications. The green in the water is some kind of water weed.
Through the main gates a complete city exists with a network of streets shops cafes etc. it’s beautiful.
