Tarbat Nass Lighthouse
Another great day of wildlife watching. We left the guesthouse in Tain at 08.30 and drove to Tarbat Ness Lighthouse near Portmahamock. The land surrounding it was teaming with birds, we sat and watched the House Martins flying in and out of their nests in the rock face feeding their chicks, there were some up at the top of the lighthouse too. Out in the scrub there were lots and lots of Stonechats (extra 1) making the most of the abundance of insects as were the many Meadow Pippits. There were loads of bees, wildflowers and more butterflies than I have seen for a long time, what a wonderful place!
Next we crossed the Cromarty Firth from Nigg to Cromarty on the small two car ferry. We drove along to Chanonry Point and joined the throng of people watching the dolphins feeding in the Firth (extra 2), I’ve never seen dolphins so close to land before, really lovely. We popped into see my brother in law who lives along the coast a bit before setting off for the journey home arriving at 6.30pm.
