Lady in Red.
What a privilege to view this stunning piece of embroidery so close to home.
As part of Kirklees Woven Festival, Oakwell Hall are the proud hosts of the first West Yorkshire display of The Red Dress, a global embroidery project that gives the voice to stories from around the world.
Created by British artist Kirstie Macleod, The Red Dress is the result of a 14 year journey ( 2009 - 2023) .
380 artists - women, men, girls, boys and non- binary contributors - from 51 countries stitched their personal and cultural stories into 87 silk panels.
Some used embroidery styles passed down for generations; others stitched reflections on trauma, resilience and healing.
Recognised by Guinness World Records 2025 as the largest collaborative embroidery project, all commissioned embroiderers were paid and continue to benefit from exhibition fees and merchandise sales.
The extra collage shows some of the details, and second extra is of the dress actually being worn.
It really took my breath away when I saw it this morning. Truly amazing and very , very beautiful.
There was also a short video telling how the dress had been made and showing some of the people actually doing the embroidery.
