Balloons at the Bridge
We have had a lot of rain. We didn't need it. The folk who live in Seddon, who are suffering the most from the on-going earthquakes, most certainly did not need all this rain, let alone the strong winds.
The Taylor River is in flood. The Omaka Ford in the area where I park when I take the dogs walking is flooded and will need more repairs.
Downtown, the Taylor River is racing through the designated floodway and is running bank to bank. This footbridge crosses the actual river channel at Riverside Park. It is called the Crinoline Bridge and is cleverly designed. When the river rises to a certain level the sides of the bridge become disconnected from the decking and slide to one side so that the bridge does not impede flood flow to any great extent.
The balloons are a total mystery. I don’t know whether they had been tied to the bridge for some sort of celebration or whether they had been swept downstream from elsewhere. Perhaps from some other sort of celebration? However they make a splash of bright colour against the dull dun colours of the flood waters. A cheerful sight!
