Calm waters

A sunny warm day eventually. We went to Newhaven this evening to a bistro for dinner with friends. I’ve been there at lunchtime but the evening experience was great. Lovely food, great company and a view over the Forth to Fife. It is also right beside Newhaven harbour. Newhaven was granted a Royal Charter in 1511. It became a major port for oysters.

In days past, even just within my lifetime, fishwives from Newhaven with their distinctive striped clothing would go round the city selling fish from their back creels, weighing up to 50lbs. They started doing this in the 18th century But no more.

Instead of the usual view of the lighthouse, this shows in the background The Fishmarket restaurant and shop. Terrific fish suppers either indoors or outside competing with the seagulls. But not tonight. Despite the warm and at times blustery wind the harbour was still doing its job and keeping the waters calm.

Shame the rain is coming in tonight - but good for the garden!
