Resting the knee

I drove to the next village for the 8.45 am consultation and got the prescription for more codeine and stronger anti-inflammatory gel. That should hopefully be processed by the weekend.

I just had time to have a coffee before driving up to Alison’s for book group. It’s only just over a mile and previously I’d have walked. We were discussing my book when I had to cancel, Lady into Fox. People thought it was strange but we had a decent discussion. Sue thought it was about fox-hunting which she used to do, someone else thought a fairy story. My take on it was that it’s about a controlling husband who wanted to mould his wife into the sort of woman he wanted her to be.

We all loved Alison’s choice “Mayflies” by Andrew O’Hagan. Although the bit set in Manchester when the protagonists were young men went on too long it did give a great sense of place and time. (Thatcher Britain). The second part was about assisted dying. It was so well done, exploring the different character’s attitude to it. One member of the group was almost in tears - we didn’t know her history but assume her partner had a slow painful death.

After some avocado and tomato on toast for lunch I got dropped off by Mr C at Chris’s. We sat in her garden in the sun, catching up on news. Mr C picked me up later. He’d got a GP appointment today and a scan on Friday - just to check he hadn’t got an embolism in his leg. He had a mishap in Algeria when he toppled off a stool while at low table, scraping his shin on the table. He didn’t clean it properly (would he listen - of course not) so now it’s a bit red and swollen. GP doesn’t think it is infected but I’ve gone round it with a pen and she’s sent off blood to test as a precaution, as is the scan. What a pair of crocks.

I’ve made aubergine, chick pea, onion and mushroom curry for our meal tonight.

It’s a glorious hot sunny day - too hot in here till we get blinds but it’s lovely looking up at the rhododendrons.
