San Luis Salt Lake

There are lots of these salt lakes / salt flats around in southern Spain. This one is not harvested on the side that we went to although I think it is across the other side of the lake. The flats near Alicante are flooded, then when the water has evaporated, the salt is harvested into great white mountains which are then divided up and shipped to Scandinavia (predominantly) as road salt.

It is difficult to describe how magnificent this place is. No one there. The lake water is bathtub warm. If you have any cuts or grazes they sting almost immediately. The salt crystals are spectacular. They are also very very sharp. Excellent for exfoliating - as husband dearest demonstrated to us.

Most of all, the light is just spectacular. It has a special feel to it when you are pointing a camera around. It's vast, flat, pink and white under foot and oh so quiet.
