First camping trip of the year
Wednesday June 4
Since we didn’t pick the camper up from its storage area until early yesterday evening, not wanting to interfere with our painter, we still had a few things to put in this morning. We finally got on the road about 10.30, headed south to Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, located at the border between Kentucky, Tennesee and Virginia, centered on a natural break in the Appalachian Mountains, which was the first gateway to the West. It’s about a 4 hour drive. We stopped a couple of times, once to fuel up the car, and once to fuel up ourselves, and stretch our legs. R drove most of the way, but I did about the last hour, handing back to him as we entered the campground, as I don’t do maneuvering of the camper! Our site was just electric, so we had to fill up the water tank as we entered. It took us quite a while to get set up, as it’s hilly country, and the pitch had a slope front to back and sideways. Fortunately, knowing this was the case with many of the pitches there, R had bought some blocks, like giant Lego blocks to raise one wheel - you can just make it out behind the camper steps. Other than that, it was quite a nice site, quite close to the bathrooms, and as you can see, screened from your neighbours. So having finally got set up we had a welcome cup of tea, and sat outside, waiting for Jen to arrive - she had a slightly longer drive, a little over 5 hours. Having had dinner and a coffee, we turned in for a fairly early night.
