The First Dragonfly
I knew that as soon as the wee meadow's grass grew tall the dragonflies would return and sure enough, here is a female calico pennant clinging to a blade of grass. (The males have red hearts.) Pennants are perchers, hunting from a stationary position. The dragonfly "squadron" has yet to arrive. They sweep back and forth across the field like miniature helicopters. I've added a view of the meadow in the early morning light in the extras.
I'm hoping some native wildflowers will spring up, but I am quite content with the nice range of grasses growing in the meadow. The dragonflies and butterflies love it and if I'm lucky, maybe some fireflies will visit later in the summer. That would be a real treat. Here's a link to some really amazing photographs of pennants.
