I did make the Tbilisi flight, my bag did not. Since I am now in Armenia it looks like being a few days, at best, before it catches up with me. A useful experience in travelling light awaits. At least it’s warm so I can do the Camino thing of washing what I’m wearing overnight and walking it dry the following morning.
We are a genial group of seven and an unflappable leader who has lent me a T-shirt .
After arriving at Tbilisi at 5.30 this morning we drove across the border to Alaverdi. Late breakfast, followed swiftly by lunch meant we were in a dozy state for our first walk in the green craggy Armenian landscape. We passed through derelict former Soviet Union mining communities, in some ways looking as if they’d just stopped extracting yesterday, a cable car stranded midair.
Our destination the 12th century Kobayr Monastery built sheer into the cliff face following the ancient trails of the monks. 13th century frescos, untouched, were extraordinary, extra. Our local guide is highly skilled and gave an impressive off the cuff explanation of the difference between the orthodox, catholic, and apostolic interpretation of the Holy Trinity.
Another meal awaits, we are 3 hours ahead of the UK. A boisterous celebration is taking place in the outdoor restaurant which is unlikely to keep us awake.
