Memories

'Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.'
Alex Haley

This photo reminds me of grandparents.

The embroidered picture was done by my husband's mum. It reminds me of Charlie and Jean - fabulous grandparents even though they were in their seventies by the time our kids were born. Jean made endless pancakes and Charlie kept cut up Mars bars in the fridge for our visits.

'Thank you for the World So Sweet' reminds me of my own parents. We said this grace before meals when I was growing up. Sadly John and Edith died when the first two of our four children were very young but they would have been so proud to meet their adult grandchildren. Both came from large families but post-war I was an only child, albeit a very happy one.

The old jar belonged to Nell, my husband's first wife's mother. An independent spirit before her time, Nell lost her husband in his forties and her only child when she was in her sixties. I never remember her feeling sorry for herself and she went on to become a much loved granny to our kids.
