Gotcha

Most people by now are aware of the issues that there can be around software upgrades.
On my last big project before heading towards retirement we had a showstopping issue to resolve. Looking around through the companies decommissioned (i.e. very old, unused) kit I found something that would do what was required, but only one unit and we needed 2 (main and backup) and preferably not 10-15 years old.
I took that unit and once it had been proven to work, 2 new units were ordered from the company in Canada that produced them. They were delivered on the day of migration, so no chance of being allowed to install them then.
Today was the day that the first one was to be installed, things did not go well. It didn't work as expected. Ultimately, I found that the one feature that was needed to work didn't work on the new units, only on the old one. Not surprisingly there had been a firmware upgrade between the old and new units from build 138 to build 564. So now it's over to the manufacturers to resolve it.
(For any one with a broadcast engineering background we need to apply an offset to some timecode and need a continuous jam sync, the new firmware only applies the offset on a momentary jam sync, not on a continuous jam sync.)
