The strangest feeling…
Having essentially collapsed into bed last night at the ungodly time (for me) of 10pm, I slept all the way through till 8 and awoke to a strange tingling in my head. My eyes felt strange, full of some sort of solid excrescence; my legs felt sore, but not too painful; my back was stiff. My God, I thought to myself, I’m dying. Turns out, this is what happens when you have a good night’s sleep.
For someone who had had a good night’s sleep, I was rather unproductive. I answered emails, and did some photos. The weather had improved dramatically – instead of the 5-6°C we had had when we needed it, i.e., while standing out in the fields of Nepean watching a football tournament – the needle had ramped up to 20°C. Admittedly, the air quality was due to take a hit as the wildfires of Manitoba and Saskatchewan began to dump their toxic fumes on us, but for today, at least, the weather held good.
Main event of the day (when isn’t it?) was Ottawacker Jr.’s early evening football match at Charmain Hooper Field West against Nepean Hotspurs. Nepean are a very good team at this level – and had won their first two matches in the league 8-1 and 7-0, so after two days of running in the cold, plus the Ottawa South School tournaments taking place today prior to the game, the chances of an OISC win were rather slim.
That is counting without the team’s spirit though. The Internationals might not have the skill levels of some other teams, but they more than match most other clubs for spirit and hard work. OISC won 2-0. Normally, that would be the cue for tales of Ottawacker Jr. heroics between the sticks, but, apart from a few smart saves and managing to do all the simple things well, he wasn’t really tested. The defence was like a brick wall, and Nepean simply couldn’t get through. Well done, I say.
Driving home, Ottawacker Jr. was very happy. I was happy too – and glad we don’t have to do it again until next week.
