Zalmhuis (Salmon House) ...
I was late today. It was already after dinner I had an opportunity to make some pictures. It was after eight o'clock p.m. just a bit dry although the sky was threatening. I went to the dyke along the river Maas to the town center Kralingseveer. There my eye was attracted to Salmon House that contrasted nicely against the dark sky.
A bit of history ...
Kralingseveer is one of the oldest centers within the limits of the municipality of Rotterdam. Since at least 1333, there's a ferry service to IJsselmonde.
A ribbon-like village developed over the centuries along the Schaardijk at the ferry port. In addition to the activity around the ferry in the nineteenth century, a major source of income arose: salmon fishing. The salmon was traded in Kralingseveer in the auction.
After 1885 the catches of salmon decreased significantly and also disappeared gradually the salmon industry. For a long time remained "a day out to Kralingseveer" a popular destination for Rotterdam locals because it was fine salmon presented in the various cafes.
One of the most famous amusements was the old pavilion Salmon House, a building on stilts on the outside of the dike, with a roof terrace that offered a very nice view over the rivers.
And this is how it looks today. Yes, a particular building ... hope you like it ... ;)
